M. Chad Hawkins, D.D.S., Pure Gold Orthodontics
“I love to see a patient’s confidence grow as we create a beautiful smile,” says Orthodontist Dr. Chad Hawkins.
“It’s so gratifying to see my patient’s reactions the day their braces come off and we compare the before and after photos.” Creating a winning smile in a comfortable and fun environment is his mission.
Dr. Hawkins says one of the most common questions he gets asked is, “What age should I put braces on my child?” He says: “it depends on the growth and development of each child, but I like to see kids at 7 years old. The bite relationship is established when the first adult molars come in around 6 years old.” Early orthodontic evaluations can help predict problems that can be corrected along with the growth of the child.
Although he likes to do early evaluations, Dr. Hawkins says most young children are not ready for braces: “Simple crowding can be corrected in one stage of orthodontic treatment. In the case of crowding or crooked teeth, I usually recommend waiting until their early teens and doing it all at once. When I see a young patient for the first time, some problems that I look for are: crossbites, open bites, underbites, habits and severe overbites.”
Dr. Hawkins believes that every child is different and should be treated accordingly, “just because your child’s 8 year old classmate has braces doesn’t mean he/she is ready.” If you have any questions or concerns it is recommended you see a trained orthodontist for an evaluation.
