We have all passed the well-known citrus stand off of Van Buren in Woodcrest. It has been a landmark in the Riverside landscape since 1977. What once was a small roadside stand of bagged oranges and handmade signs has been transformed into the most charming artisanal grocery store, featuring locally-sourced independent purveyors, offering the best for both your holiday and everyday table.

What the Gless family has created is a mecca of the very best offerings in food and food related gifts that you will not find in any ordinary grocery store. Don’t get me wrong, this is still, above all else a citrus market offering the sweetest oranges but it is now presented to you in what is no less than a gallery. The market is charmingly decorated with farming and citrus related antiques.

They feature grass-fed beef from Brandt farm, and small batch soda and beers from Packinghouse and farm fresh eggs. You can get locally roasted coffee from DCH roasters and freshly baked bread from Crème de la Crème bakery. There are juices and salads and olive oils, fresh cookies, and dried fruit and nuts. There are unique jams featuring the Gless fruit and farmers market finds of nut butters. The produce is nothing less than amazing.

There are beautiful gift boxes of fresh dates from Gless ranch in Coachella Valley, and mangoes that weighed over a pound each, juicy, and as sweet as candy. The figs are like fresh little jewels. They also offer citrus and herb infused soaps, lotions, scrubs and oils.

This store is a must stop for your holiday shopping. You can find unique citrus-themed and Riverside themed gifts that you will not find anywhere else. One can sumptuously complete a holiday party look with bowls of fruits, nuts, freshly baked cookies & breads, jams, spreads and dips all in one stop from this special place.

This family affair currently has three generations of Gless’ tending to the business’s needs. Patriarch John is still at the helm. He is a third generation citrus farmer, but this farm was not inherited. At the age of 22, this Renaissance man and his beloved wife Janet bought bare ground and John hand planted what would become their legacy in Riverside.

Since those first days out on Van Buren, hand-bagging oranges, this has been a real family affair. All four of John and Janet’s children are involved with the daily business in one way or another, either at this location or at one of the other several farms the family owns. Today there are also grandchildren and great grandchildren all in on this thriving legacy business. This is now a fourth-generation family farm.

The seven-day-a-week work ethic this couple has fostered shines through in every detail, from the new building to the roses they hand-propagated from clipping off the noted roses we all admire on Victoria Avenue. The Gless family are a rich part of what makes Riverside what it is. And their ranch is what our history is steeped in.
